Evaluating the Effect of Crude Oil Contamination on Soil Geotechnical properties: A Detailed Review

Abstract

Crude oil pollution of the soil had become a major threat to structures construction. This review work was done to evaluate the impact of crude oil spill on the geotechnical characteristics of the soils. This review tried to provide a summary on the influence of crude oil on the Atterberg limits, compaction and permeability, angle of internal friction and cohesion, and consolidation properties of soil samples. It was observed from the literature review that, the rate at which the properties were altered was a factor of the quantity of oil inside the soils. Findings from this review revealed that all the geotechnical characteristics can be remarkably altered by crude oil pollution. Most of the literature reduced reduction in the Atterberg limits, the compression index (Cc) and permeability of the soils, as the volume crude oil in the soils increased.
