Abstract
Hypertension is a significant public health concern, with a rising burden among civil servants who face unique occupational and lifestyle pressures. This study aimed to provide empirical evidence to inform preventive and management strategies. This descriptive cross-sectional study involved 352 civil servants at Rivers State University, selected through a multistage sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and physical measurements, and analysed using SPSS version 26.0. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the data, while chi-square tests and binary logistic regression were employed to assess relationships and identify predictors of hypertension. Results showed a high hypertension prevalence rate of 43.2% among respondents. Males had significantly higher odds of hypertension than females (AOR = 4.71, p = 0.001). Individuals previously diagnosed with hypertension were nearly six times more likely to be currently hypertensive (AOR = 5.79, p=0.000), while a family history of diabetes was also significantly associated with increased risk (AOR = 3.36, p=0.010). Engaging in vigorous physical activity significantly reduced the odds of hypertension (AOR = 0.26, p = 0.019). Similarly, respondents with a normal (AOR = 0.22, p = 0.002) and overweight (AOR = 0.18, p = 0.000) BMI had lower odds compared to those classified as obese. In conclusion, the prevalence of hypertension among civil servants at Rivers State University is high and significantly influenced by a range of factors, including gender, medical history, physical activity, BMI, and work hours. It is recommended that workplace health programs promoting a healthy lifestyle and regular screening be institutionalised.
