Leadership Styles And Workers’ Performance in Rivers State Ministry of Health, 2015-2025

Abstract

The study examined leadership styles and workers’ performance in Rivers State Ministry of Health, 2015-2025. Specifically, the study investigated the nature and pattern of leadership styles, the challenges of leadership styles towards enhancing workers’ performance and to ascertain how leadership styles have enhanced workers’ performance in Rivers State Ministry of Health. The study adopted the Path-Goal theory of leadership. In this study, the descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study made use of both primary and secondary methods of data collection while purposive sampling technique was used to determine the sample size for the study. Questionnaires were developed and used as instrument for data collection. A sample of respondents was used. Data obtained were analysed using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation tables. Results obtained showed that: there are significant leadership styles available in Rivers State Ministry of Health, these include bureaucratic leadership style, democratic leadership style, visionary leadership style, transformational leadership style, strategic leadership style, pacesetting leadership style, transactional leadership style, coaching leadership style, authoritative/autocratic leadership style, and laissez-faire leadership style. Also, leadership styles enhanced the workers’ performance in Rivers State Ministry of Health through several ways. Equally, challenges of leadership styles which limited the enhancement of workers’ performance in Rivers State Ministry of Health within the period under review were discovered and suggestion tackle the challenges profered. Based on these results, the study recommended amongst others that the leadership arm of the Rivers State Ministry of Health should adopt the democratic, visionary, transformational, pacesetting and coaching styles of leadership.
