Effects of Number Heads Together Instructional Technique on Upper Basic Education Students’ Achievement in Social Studies in Tudun Wada, Kano State
Abstract
The study investigated the effects of number heads together instructional technique on upper Basic Education students’ achievement in social studies in Tudun Wada, Kano State. The study raised two specific objectives, answered two research questions and tested two hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The design adopted was a quasi- experimental research design and the population consisted of 10,824, with 6,375 male and 4,449 females. The sample consisted of 112 students from 2 intact classes from 2 upper basic schools assigned to experimental and control groups. Social Studies Achievement Test with 50 multiple choice items was used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and t-test of independent sample was used to test the hypotheses. Findings revealed that there was a significant effect of number heads together instructional technique on students’ achievement in social studies in the experimental group. It was also found that there was no significant effect of gender on achievement of students taught social studies using number heads together instructional technique. The study recommended that social studies teachers should be trained on how to apply number head-together instructional technique in teaching social studies at junior secondary school level and that teachers should develop lesson plans according to the basic principles of number-head-together instructional technique to make their classes more of students’ center
