Abstract

Modern-day community centre designs across Nigeria rely on alien architectural models not rooted in local socio-cultural values or adapted to regional climate, thus resulting in socially disconnected, culturally displaced and environmentally performing poorly public spaces. This research aims to understand the contribution architectural design could have towards social engagement. It adopts qualitative Research Through Design approach incorporating comprehensive Literature Review, Case studies, site observations and thematic investigation of sociability within traditional Igbo settlement and existing community facilities. The findings reveal Indigenous design principles which favour sociopetal, space creating designs increase visual connections, accessibility & a sense of community, whilst; Passive bio-climatic techniques enhance occupant comfort, improve thermal performance and reduce cooling demand. Drawing upon the theories of space syntax, environmental psychology and traditional design approaches, this study further proposes a design framework promoting sociopetal spatial planning of a community centre facilitating universal access coupled with climate responsive building techniques which integrate the local art. This RTD concludes community centre should be designed as a socio-cultural hub, a facilitator for public participation safeguarding regional identity and sustainability across Southeastern, Nigeria.
