Evaluation of Basic Mathematics Operations of Numbers of Primary Schools’ Pupils in Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, Nigeria

John Aduwa, Ph.D, Robert Saturday Paul Ph.D, Gabriel Friday Emunefe

Abstract

The study evaluated the achievement of pupils in four basic mathematics operations of numbers. The study was conducted for all public primary six pupils in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Two research questions were raised and one hypothesis was formulated for the study. The study employed survey research design. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 92 primary six pupils from four public primary schools in the Local Government. Mathematics Basic Skills Achievement Test was the instrument used to collect relevant data from the Pupils. This instrument was validated by the methods of content and construct validity, and its reliability was tested by Kuder-Richardson formula 21. The two research questions were answered by methods of mean and standard deviation while the only research hypothesis was tested by t-test. At the end of the data analysis, the results showed that the achievement of male and female pupils in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers were relatively low. One of the recommendations made by the study was that qualified mathematics teachers should be recruited and allowed to teach mathematics in each of the classes in the public primary schools. In addition, the mathematics teachers in the public primary schools in the area should focus more on the teaching of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers in all the classes.
