Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Reducing Post- Traumatic Stress Symptoms Among Trauma Patients in Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT, Nigeria
Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in reducing post- traumatic stress symptoms among trauma patients in Abuja Municipal Area Council , FCT, Nigeria. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was adopted. The population comprised 80 trauma patients, from which 60 participants exhibiting post-traumatic stress symptoms were purposively selected and randomly assigned to experimental (30) and control (30) groups. Data were collected using the Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms Questionnaire (PTSS-Q), which had a reliability coefficient of 0.82. The experimental group received an eight-week CBT intervention, while the control group received conventional counselling. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question, while Analysis of Covariance was used to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that the experimental group recorded a greater reduction in post-traumatic stress symptoms than the control group. The ANCOVA result indicated a statistically significant effect of CBT, F(1, 57) = 24.417, p < .001. The study concluded that CBT is effective in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms among trauma patients. It was recommended that CBT be integrated into trauma rehabilitation and mental health services and that relevant professionals receive appropriate training in its application.
