Impact of Organizational Structure on Productivity of Processing Firms in Cross River State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined the impact of organizational structure on performance of processing firms in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study specifically investigated the influence of centralization, formalization, departmentalization, and span of control on the productivity of processing firms. Organizational structure remains a critical determinant of organizational effectiveness because it provides the framework through which activities are coordinated, controlled, and directed toward achieving organizational goals. Processing firms operate in highly competitive environments where productivity serves as a major indicator of organizational success and sustainability. The study adopted a conceptual and empirical review approach by examining existing literature on organizational structure and productivity. The Contingency Theory served as the theoretical foundation of the study. Findings from reviewed literature revealed that organizational structure significantly influences productivity through improved communication, coordination, decision-making, specialization, and efficient utilization of organizational resources. The study concluded that processing firms with effective organizational structures are more likely to achieve higher productivity levels than those with poorly designed structures. The study recommended that processing firms should adopt flexible organizational structures, encourage appropriate decentralization of authority, establish clear reporting relationships, and maintain effective spans of control to enhance productivity.
