Abstract

This study examines characterization of the effects of cemetery locations on urban residents in Enugu with the aim of identifying the major impacts, residents’ perceptions and the implications for sustainable urban planning and environmental management. The data were derived from a questionnaire survey of 659 residents that live in buffer zone of 300 metres radius around each of the five cemeteries in the study areas. Principal component analysis was used to collapse the 23 primary variables, which were identified as the possible effects of the location of cemeteries on the residents in the study area, into manageable and fewer factors. The results revealed that Safety/security effect, (24.134%); emotional/fear effect, (20.978%); naturalisation/regulation effect, (19.637%); memory effect, (11.095%); contamination effects, (10.381%); and landuse/neighbourhood value effect (5.609%) were the characterization of the effects of cemeteries on the residents of Enugu metropolis. The understanding of the revelation provides valuable insights for urban planners, environmental managers, policy makers and other stakeholders in developing sustainable cemetery planning and management approaches Key words: Cemetery, socio-economic, effects, sustainable, environmental
