Developing A Conceptual Framework Linking West African Agricultural Value Chains to Household Economic Stability

Blessing Chika Jones, Michael Ominyi

Abstract

Agriculture remains the principal source of employment and income for the majority of households in West Africa, yet participation in agricultural markets has not translated consistently into durable improvements in household welfare. Research on agricultural value chains and research on household economic outcomes have largely developed as separate bodies of work, and the mechanisms through which value chain participation shapes the stability, rather than merely the level, of household income remain insufficiently theorized. This paper develops a conceptual framework that links the structure, governance, and performance of West African agricultural value chains to household economic stability. Drawing on an integrative review of the value chain, rural livelihoods, and development economics literatures, the framework identifies five transmission pathways: the income pathway, the employment pathway, the food price and access pathway, the risk sharing pathway, and the knowledge and technology pathway. It further specifies household level mediators, including asset accumulation, savings behavior, livelihood diversification, and intra household resource allocation, as well as contextual moderators such as institutional quality, infrastructure, social capital, and exposure to climatic, market, and security shocks. Seven testable propositions are derived from the framework. The paper concludes by outlining an empirical agenda and policy implications for inclusive value chain development in the region.
