Psycho-Social Variables Influencing the Well-Being Of Retirees of Local Government Staff in Kogi State, Nigeria

Maliki, Umar Sanda

Abstract

This study investigated the psycho-social factors influencing the well-being of retirees of Local Government staff in Kogi State, Nigeria. Specifically, it examined the influence of stress, depression, anxiety, health status, financial condition and age on retirees’ post- retirement well-being. The study was guided by two research questions and seven null hypotheses tested at the 0.05 level of significance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample comprised 210 male and female retirees drawn from selected Local Government Areas in Kogi State using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a researcher-developed instrument titled Psycho-Social Variables and Well-being of retirees of Local Government Staff Questionnaire (PVWRLGSQ). The instrument was subjected to face, content, construct and convergent validity procedures, while its reliability was established through the test–retest method, yielding a Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.70. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The findings revealed that stress and health were strong predictors of well-being while depression anxiety, financial condition and age did not exert significant influence on the well-being of retirees of Local Government staff in Kogi State. Based on the findings, the study recommended the provision of structured psychological counselling and support services for retirees, the implementation of comprehensive pre-retirement education programmes and the strengthening of family and community support systems. The study also underscored the need for timely and equitable disbursement of retirement benefits, the creation of opportunities for post-retirement engagement, intergenerational interaction i.e. senior citizen day/week where retirees can share experiences and skills thereby enhancing their sense of purpose should be encouraged in communities where retirees live and policy reforms aimed at promoting social inclusion and enhancing retirees’ quality of life. The study further recommended that future research should explore additional contextual and longitudinal factors affecting retirees’ well-being.
