Communication Audits as Strategic Tools for Early-Stage Organizations: A Conceptual Framework for Gap Analysis, Stakeholder Alignment, and Brand Positioning

Priscilla Amerley Nortey, Steve Senyo Ayivi-Donkor

Abstract

The communication audit, a systematic assessment of an organization's communication systems, messages, and relationships, has been developed and applied largely in established organizations with mature communication functions. Early-stage organizations, including startups and newly founded ventures and nonprofits, face a different situation: they are forming their identity, building their first stakeholder relationships, and competing for legitimacy and attention with minimal resources, yet they have little communication history to audit and rarely the capacity to commission a conventional one. This paper argues that the communication audit, suitably reconceived, is in fact more valuable at the early stage than later, because it can shape an emerging communication system before dysfunctions become entrenched. It develops a conceptual framework that adapts the audit to early-stage conditions and organizes it around three strategic purposes: gap analysis, the diagnosis of distances between intended and actual communication; stakeholder alignment, the assessment and coordination of relationships with the publics on whom the venture depends; and brand positioning, the evaluation of whether the organization's identity is clearly and distinctively conveyed. The framework specifies a phased, resource-sensitive process for each purpose, advances propositions about its effects, and discusses implementation by founders. The contribution is a theoretically grounded and practically feasible account of how a tool designed for mature organizations can be turned to the formative needs of new ones.
