Abstract

This study investigated psychomotor skills acquisition as a determinant of electrical installation workshop instructors' effectiveness in Technical Colleges in Delta State, Nigeria. The increasing demand for competent technical manpower has necessitated the need for instructors who possess adequate practical and manipulative skills required for effective workshop instruction. The study examined the extent to which psychomotor skills acquisition influences instructors' effectiveness in the delivery of electrical installation and maintenance works. Four research questions guided the study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population comprised of 41 electrical installation workshop instructors in the nine technical colleges in Delta State. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled Psychomotor Skills Acquisition and Instructors' Effectiveness Questionnaire . The instrument was validated by experts in Industrial Technology Education and Measurement and Evaluation. Reliability was established using Cronbach Alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.84. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Findings revealed that psychomotor skills acquisition significantly enhances workshop management, practical demonstration competence, and students' skill development. The study concluded that instructors who continuously acquire psychomotor skills demonstrate higher levels of effectiveness in technical workshop instruction. It was recommended that government and educational stakeholders organize regular practical training, workshops, and industrial attachment programmes for electrical installation instructors to improve their professional competence.
