Strategic Agility and Data-Driven Decision-Making as Predictors of Institutional Effectiveness Among State-Owned Universities in Delta State
Abstract
As higher education becomes more complicated, there is an increasing need for organizational qualities that promote institutional effectiveness. The study focused on strategic agility and data- driven decision-making as determinants of institutional success of state-owned universities in Delta State. The study design used is a correlational survey. The population consisted of 1,421 academic and senior administrative workers of the three state-owned universities in Delta State of Nigeria, from which a sample of 400 respondents was selected through a multistage sampling technique. Data were acquired through the Strategic Agility, Data-Driven Decision-Making and Institutional Effectiveness Questionnaire (SADDDIEQ). The instrument was evaluated by specialists and dependability was confirmed with Cronbach’s Alpha giving a total reliability coefficient of 0.88. Simple and multiple regression models were used to evaluate the data at the 0.05 level of significance. Results indicated that strategic agility was a strong predictor of institutional effectiveness. Data driven decision making also predicted institutional effectiveness strongly. Furthermore, a combination of strategic agility and data-driven decision-making had a significant predictive effect on institutional effectiveness and was able to explain a large proportion of the variance in institutional effectiveness of the universities analyzed. The findings of the study showed that the combination of adaptive strategic capabilities and evidence-based management decision-making improved institutional effectiveness of institutions. University administrators were encouraged to improve their strategic agility, embed data-driven decision- making, invest in digital information systems and staff capacity development and integrate these organizational capabilities into institutional governance processes.
