Abstract

This study examined attendance and punctuality as correlates of academic performance among secondary school students in selected secondary schools in Yenagoa metropolis. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. A correlational research design was adopted because the study sought to determine the relationship between student attendance, punctuality, and academic performance without manipulating the variables. The population of the study comprised secondary school students in Yenagoa metropolis, while a sample of 300 students was selected using a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and a student record extraction sheet. The questionnaire focused on students’ attendance patterns and punctuality, while academic performance was measured using students’ scores in core subjects. The data collected were analysed using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed a moderate positive and significant relationship between student attendance patterns and academic performance, with r = 0.49 and p < 0.05. The findings also showed a moderate positive and significant relationship between student punctuality and academic performance, with r = 0.58 and p < 0.05. Based on the findings, the study concluded that regular attendance and punctuality are important factors associated with improved academic performance among secondary school students. It was recommended that school administrators should strengthen attendance monitoring and that teachers, parents, and school authorities should work together to encourage punctuality among students.
