Inweregbu, Onyekachi. Anthony Ph.D., Ikwudinma Adaobi Eugenia, Obiah Mmadubuike Emmanuel

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of tax fraud on per capita income in the 21st century Nigeria from 1994-2024. The study adopts an ex-post facto and descriptive research design. Secondary data were sourced from publications of United Nations Development Program , Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service . Company income Tax Fraud , Petroleum Profit Tax Fraud , Customs and Excise Duties Fraud and Value Added Tax Fraud were employed as the independent variables. Per capita income is the only dependent variable. Descriptive statistics were utilized for the study variables while Autoregressive Distributed Lag model was used to test the hypothesis. The study found out that both Company income tax and Petroleum profit tax had significant positive effect on per capital income while Customs and excise duty and Value added tax had a significant negative effect on per capital income. The paper recommends that: government should strengthen Federal Inland Revenue Service operations through digital tax administration, and through the regulatory authority formulate policies that would encourage companies in Nigeria to operate at their best. They should promote transparency in public finance and the use of tax revenue for economic development, among other measures.
