Quality of Guidance and Counselling Service Delivery and School Climate as Predictors of Students' Career Development Among Senior Secondary School Students in Kwali Area Council, Abuja
Abstract
This study investigated the predictive influence of quality of guidance and counselling service delivery and school climate on students' career development among senior secondary school students in Kwali Area Council, Abuja. The study adopted a correlational survey research design. The population comprised the entire senior secondary students in public secondary schools within the Area Council, from which a sample size of one hundred and thirty-eight (138) students was selected using a multistage sampling procedure. Three instruments - Quality of Guidance and Counselling Service Delivery Questionnaire , School Climate Questionnaire , and Students' Career Development Scale - were used for data collection. The instruments were validated by experts in Guidance and Counselling and Educational Measurement and Evaluation, while their internal consistency was established using Cronbach's Alpha reliability technique resulting in reliability indexes of 0.79, 0.81, and 0.78 respectively for QGCSDQ, SCQ, and SCDS. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. The findings indicated that quality of guidance and counselling service delivery significantly predicted students' career development. School climate also significantly predicted students' career development. Furthermore, both variables jointly exerted a significant predictive influence on students' career development, explaining a substantial proportion of the variance in career development outcomes. The study concluded that strengthening the quality of guidance and counselling service delivery and fostering positive school climates are indispensable strategies for improving students' career development. It was recommended that educational authorities recruit qualified professional counsellors, strengthen career guidance programmes, provide continuous professional development for school counsellors, and promote supportive school environments that encourage students' educational and occupational development.
