Abstract

This study investigated the effect of multimedia-PowerPoint instructional strategy on students’ achievement and retention in Quantitative-Economics in senior secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. Two research questions were formulated and two null-hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted quasi-experimental research design. The population for the study was all the 22 Senior Secondary Schools with a total of 693 senior secondary school two (SS2) students (324 male and 369 female) in Jos North LGA of Plateau state. A sample of two co-educational public secondary schools and 85 Economics students was used for the study through purposive sampling techniques which consisted of 45 students for the experimental and 40 students for the control group. Quantitative- Economics Achievement Test was used as instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated, trial-tested and its reliability coefficient of 0.93% was determined using Kuder- Richardson 20. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while Analysis of Covariance was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that multimedia-PowerPoint instructional strategy improved students’ achievement and enhanced their retention level in quantitative-Economics more than the conventional teaching method. The study recommended that Plateau State Government should build and equip computer laboratories (with multimedia-PowerPoint resources) in all the state public secondary schools for teaching and learning of Economics, Economics teachers in Jos North LGA should adopt Multimedia-PowerPoint Instructional Strategy in teaching and learning of Quantitative-Economics (QE) as MPIS is gender friendly.
