Omajawu William, Prof., Eggon A. Henry and, Augustine S. Azi PhD

Abstract

Learning Economics that involve quantitative-Economics such as Mathematics, statistics and graph using conventional teaching method is not fun for most female and male learners in both public and private schools, instead, it is viewed with trepidation and has made many Economics students view the subject as abstract, complex and difficult course at the secondary schools. To turn this situation around, the researcher seeks to leverage innovative multimedia PowerPoint instructional strategy that could help both female and male learner overcome these difficulties. The study aimed at promoting gender equity among students in terms of their interest and achievement in quantitative Economics through effective utilization of Multimedia- PowerPoint Instructional strategy in secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. For this cause, two research questions were formulated and two null-hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted quasi-experimental research design. The population for the study consisted of all the 22 public Secondary Schools with their SS2 Economics students in Jos North LGA of Plateau state. A sample of two co- educational public secondary schools and 85 Economics students was used for the study through purposive sampling techniques. Quantitative-Economics Interest Scale and Quantitative- Economics Achievement Test were used as instruments for data collection. The instruments were validated, trial-tested and its reliability coefficient of 0.85 and 0.93 were determined using Cronbach Alpha and Kuder-Richardson 20 respectively. Mean and was used to answer the research questions, while Analysis of Covariance was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that multimedia- PowerPoint instructional strategy enhance students’ interest and improved their achievement in quantitative-Economics irrespective of gender more than the conventional teaching method. The study recommended that Plateau State Government should build and equip computer laboratories (with multimedia-PowerPoint resources) in all the state public secondary schools for teaching and learning of Economics.
