Moses, Precious Habibat

Abstract

Teacher education is fundamental to the development of a competent education system because it equips teachers with the knowledge and professional skills required for effective teaching and learning. This study assessed the historical development, staffing trends, and funding patterns of Colleges of Education in Kogi State, Nigeria. The objectives were to examine the historical evolution of the institutions, analyse staffing trends, evaluate funding patterns, and challenges affecting staff and institutional financing. The study adopted a historical research design complemented by a descriptive survey design. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 275 respondents comprising academic staff, non-academic staff, and administrators from the selected Colleges of Education in Kogi State. Data were collected using researcher-developed instrument: Historical Development, Staffing and Funding Questionnaire for respondents. Face and content validity were established by three experts in Educational Management and Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined through a pilot study using Cronbach's alpha, yielding an overall reliability coefficient of 0.82. Data were analyzed using historical analysis and descriptive statistics (percentages, mean scores, and charts). The findings revealed substantial institutional growth but persistent shortages of qualified personnel, inadequate recruitment, and staff migration. Funding remained largely dependent on government allocations. The study concluded that improving funding, staff development, and strategic recruitment is essential for strengthening Colleges of Education in Kogi State.
