Factors Influencing the Adoption of Digital Payment Systems in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi
Abstract
This study examined the factors influencing the adoption of digital payment systems in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Bauchi State, Nigeria. The increasing integration of digital technologies into financial transactions has transformed payment processes within higher educational institutions, making electronic payment systems an essential tool for efficient service delivery, financial transparency, and revenue management. Despite the implementation of various digital payment platforms by the Polytechnic, challenges such as security concerns, inadequate digital literacy, unreliable internet connectivity, transaction failures, and infrastructural deficiencies continue to affect their widespread adoption and effective utilization. The study therefore sought to determine the factors influencing users' acceptance and continued use of digital payment systems within the institution. The specific objectives were to assess the level of awareness and utilization of digital payment systems among students and staff; examine the influence of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, trust and security, digital literacy, internet accessibility, and ICT infrastructure on digital payment adoption; identify the challenges affecting adoption; and recommend strategies for improving digital payment usage in the institution. The study adopted the Technology Acceptance Model as its principal theoretical framework, complemented by relevant constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology . A descriptive survey research design was employed. The target population comprised students, academic staff, and non-academic staff of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. A structured questionnaire was used as the primary instrument for data collection, while descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis) were used to analyze the data at a 0.05 level of significance. The study found that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, trust and security, digital literacy, internet accessibility, and ICT infrastructure significantly influenced the adoption of digital payment systems. It also revealed that unstable internet connectivity, transaction delays, cybersecurity concerns, poor electricity supply, and limited user awareness were major barriers to effective adoption. The study concluded that improving digital infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity measures, enhancing digital literacy through continuous user training, and providing reliable institutional support would significantly increase the adoption and effective utilization of digital payment systems in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi. The study recommended increased investment in ICT infrastructure, regular user sensitization programmes, enhanced technical support services, stronger data security mechanisms, and the development of policies that promote seamless and secure digital payment transactions within the institution.
