Influence of Stress Factors on Academic Performance Among Business Education Students in Colleges of Education, Ogun State, Nigeria
Abstract
Success in any educational institution is measured by performance of students at a given period of time. This is often reflected in the grades, marks, or scores obtained at any level of evaluation. The level of performance is usually dictated by a number of factors influencing the student positively or negatively. One of such negative factors is stress, which is the main context of this paper. Business education students in colleges of education are not free from stress factors which have advise effect on their academic performance. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate into the influence of stress factors on academic performance among business education students in Colleges of Education, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study involved three objectives, research questions and hypotheses respectively. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The study involved a population of 1,000 business education students with a sample size of 400 students. The researcher used structured questionnaire as instrument for data collection titled Influence of Stress Factors on Academic Performance of Business Education Students in Colleges of Education, Ogun State – “ISFAPBESCE”, out of 400 questionnaires administered 395 copies were properly completed and returned. The findings revealed that examination anxiety has the highest stress factors and that there is a positive relationship between stress factors and academic performance, as stress increases academic performance decreases and vice-versa. The paper concluded that without proper stress management students’ academic performance may decline. It was recommended that colleges of education should establish a functional counseling unit to provide professional support for students experiencing personal and academic stress.
