Abstract

The study focused on assessing the unintended outcomes of technology integration in secondary education delivery in Rivers State. The design of the study was descriptive survey while the population was 8, 452 teachers in the public senior secondary schools in Rivers State from where 382 teachers were drawn as sample using random sampling technique and consisted of 197 females and 185 males. The instrument used for data collection was a 15 item, questionnaire named “Unintended Outcomes of Technology Integration in Secondary Education Delivery Questionnaire” (UOTISEDQ) which was content and face validated o by three Measurement and Evaluation experts in the Department of Educational Psychology in University of Port Harcourt. The reliability of the instrument was estimated using Cronbach alpha and produced an index of 0.88 which showed that the instrument was reliable. The researcher administered 382 copies of questionnaire but only 361 copies representing 94.5% were retrieved from 179 male and 182 female respondents. The research questions raised were answered using mean and standard deviation while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that reasons teachers integrated technology in instructional delivery was access to information for lessons, possibility of using different instructional styles among others. It was revealed that the unintended outcomes of such technology integration included online bullying, digital divide and health challenge and so on. The study identified educational support for disadvantaged students and use of hybrid education system as a way out of these situations while the provision of configured devices for teaching and learning by school administrators was recommended.
