Evaluating the Influence of Sports Infrastructure Design on Student Well-Being and Campus Life: A Case Study of Caleb University

Amori O. Opeyemi and Oluwatoyin O. Ajayi

Abstract

The design and quality of sports infrastructure have become increasingly important in creating university environments that support students' physical health, mental well-being, and social development. Well-planned sports facilities not only encourage participation in recreational and competitive activities but also contribute to a more active, inclusive, and engaging campus community. This study evaluates the influence of sports infrastructure design on student well- being and campus life using Caleb University, Lagos State, as a case study. A quantitative research approach was adopted, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to students. The responses were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques to assess students' perceptions of the accessibility, functionality, comfort, and adequacy of the existing sports facilities and their effects on campus life. The findings reveal that the availability of functional and accessible sports infrastructure positively influences students' physical activity levels, psychological well-being, social interaction, and overall satisfaction with the university environment. However, the study also identifies challenges related to facility adequacy, maintenance, and accessibility that limit optimal utilisation. The study concludes that strategic investment in well-designed, user-centred, and sustainable sports infrastructure can significantly improve student well-being, strengthen campus life, and enhance the overall educational experience. It recommends that universities prioritise continuous improvement and effective management of sports facilities as part of broader campus development initiatives.
