Assessment of Quality Assurance Mechanisms in the Implementation of Building Technology Education Programs of Colleges of Education in South – South Nigeria

George Johnson Ntegwung, and Edima Sylvanus Sunday

Abstract

Quality assurance (QA) is essential for maintaining and improving the quality of teacher education, particularly in technical programmes such as Building Technology Education. This study assessed the implementation of QA mechanisms in Colleges of Education in the South- South geopolitical zone of Nigeria, examining the adequacy of resources, operational challenges, and their effects on graduate competence. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 150 purposively selected respondents comprising lecturers, quality assurance officers, and students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequencies, percentages) and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis) at a 0.05 significance level. The results revealed that quality assurance mechanisms are implemented at a high level in Building Technology Education programmes. Quality assurance inputs, including institutional resources and personnel, were found to be adequate for programme implementation. However, several challenges affecting the implementation of quality assurance mechanisms were identified. The results further showed a strong and significant relationship between quality assurance mechanisms, quality assurance inputs, implementation challenges, and programme implementation effectiveness, with quality assurance mechanisms and inputs contributing positively, while implementation challenges contributed negatively. The study recommends strengthening QA processes, improving resource allocation, enhancing staff capacity, addressing systemic challenges, and fostering stakeholder engagement to ensure effective implementation of Building Technology Education programmes.
