Factors Affecting the Implementation of the Senior Secondary School Physics Curriculum in Government – Owned Schools in Ikeduru LGA, Imo State

Abstract

This study assessed factors influencing the implementation of the senior secondary school physics curriculum in government-owned secondary schools in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. Specifically, it examined whether teaching methods, teacher availability, and the conduct of physics practical’s enhance curriculum delivery. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The population comprised all 15 physics teachers across the 14 government secondary schools in the LGA, who were included in the sample through census sampling. Data were collected using a validated instrument titled Physics Curriculum Implementation Questionnaire , which yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.81. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-tests and correlation analysis tested the hypotheses at the 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that demonstration, discussion, role-play, and brainstorming methods significantly enhanced curriculum implementation, whereas the lecture method contributed minimally. Teacher availability improved the teaching of key physics concepts, while the conduct of practical’s strengthened students’ understanding of abstract ideas. The study concluded that effective implementation of the physics curriculum requires adequate staffing, interactive pedagogy, and regular practical activities. It recommended that government recruit more qualified physics teachers, provide well-equipped laboratories, and train teachers in modern, student-centered instructional methods.
