Beyond Ad Share Revenue: A Comparative Analysis of Monetization and Diversification Strategies in the Creator Economy

Kelechi Chantel Egwuatu Anyanwu

Abstract

The creator economy has matured from a niche of advertising-funded hobbyists into a global market estimated in the region of 190 to 250 billion United States dollars in 2024. For much of its first decade, the dominant route to creator income was a share of the advertising revenue generated by platform-served impressions. This paper argues that advertising revenue sharing, while foundational, is structurally insufficient as a standalone income model because it is volatile, unevenly distributed, and ultimately governed by platform decisions that creators cannot influence. Drawing on a comparative review of platform payout structures, market data, and the emerging interdisciplinary literature on creators and platform labour, the paper develops a taxonomy of six monetization channels and evaluates each on creator revenue share, predictability, scalability, and strategic trade-off. It then examines three families of diversification strategy: multiplying revenue streams, distributing presence across platforms, and shifting from rented audiences toward owned distribution. The analysis finds that the most financially resilient creators do not simply earn more from advertising; they recompose their income toward recurring, community-funded, and creator-owned streams that reduce exposure to any single platform or algorithm. The paper concludes that monetization strategy in the contemporary creator economy is fundamentally a question of risk management rather than of revenue maximization alone, and it sets out implications for creators, platforms, and brand partners.
