Digital Marketing Strategies and Insurance Product Sales Performance Among Insurance Companies in Lagos State, Nigeria

Falade, A. F., PhD.

Abstract

The Nigerian insurance industry, despite its vast potential, grapples with persistently low penetration rates, a challenge often attributed to archaic marketing practices and a disconnect from the digitally native consumer. This study investigates the nexus between digital marketing strategies and insurance product sales performance within the context of Lagos State, Nigeria. Adopting a positivist paradigm and a quantitative cross-sectional survey design, the study examines the influence of three key digital marketing dimensions, Search Engine Optimization , Social Media Marketing , and Content Marketing (CM) on sales performance. Data were collected from a stratified random sample of 436 top, middle, and lower-level managers drawn from a population of 2,062 employees across 11 selected insurance companies in Lagos. An adapted and validated questionnaire served as the primary instrument, demonstrating strong reliability (Cronbach’s α > 0.70) and validity (Content Validity Index > 0.5). Results from the multiple regression analysis reveal that all three digital marketing strategies are significant positive predictors of insurance product sales performance, with Content Marketing exhibiting the most substantial impact (β = 0.577, p < 0.001). The model accounted for a substantial 78.4% of the variance in sales performance. The study concludes that the strategic deployment of digital marketing is not merely ancillary but a critical driver of commercial success in the Nigerian insurance market. We recommend a paradigm shift from traditional, relationship-centric models to a hybrid approach that integrates digital agility with human-centric advisory services.
