Parental Emotional and Informational Support as Correlate of Students’ Interest in Accounting in Senior Secondary Schools in Ondo State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined Parental Emotional and Informational Support as Correlates of Students’ Interest in Accounting in Senior Secondary Schools in Ondo State, Nigeria. Two specific objectives, research questions and two corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. The research adopted a correlational design, involving 351 Senior Secondary One (SS1) students drawn from 12 public secondary schools across six Local Government Areas in Ondo State, using a multi-stage sampling technique. Two structured instruments were used for data collection: Parental Emotional and Informational Support Questionnaire and Students’ Interest in Accounting Questionnaire . The instruments were validated by experts and yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.82 using Cronbach Alpha. Data collected were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that parental emotional support had a high positive and significant relationship with students’ interest in Accounting (r = .662, p < 0.05), while parental informational support showed a moderate positive and significant relationship (r = .597, p < 0.05). These results imply that students whose parents offer encouragement, affection, and academic guidance tend to develop greater enthusiasm and commitment towards learning Accounting. The study concluded that both emotional and informational parental support are crucial determinants of students’ academic interest and motivation in Accounting. It was recommended that parents should consciously provide warmth, empathy, and educational guidance to enhance students’ engagement and performance in Accounting. Schools should also sensitize parents on the importance of emotional and informational support in improving students’ learning outcomes.
