Digital Education and Job Creation: A Strategic Framework for Economic Empowerment in Nigeria

Abstract

Youth unemployment remains one of the most pressing developmental challenges confronting Nigeria, with structural economic transformation and digital disruption simultaneously displacing traditional jobs and creating new categories of digital work. This paper develops a strategic framework for harnessing digital education as a vehicle for job creation and economic empowerment in Nigeria. Grounded in Human Capital Theory and the Digital Economy Framework, the study conducts a conceptual and analytical review of the relationship between digital education investments, digital skills acquisition, and labour market outcomes. The analysis identifies four strategic pathways through which digital education generates employment: the creation of digital entrepreneurship ecosystems, the expansion of the gig economy, the enhancement of employability in formal digital sectors, and the digitalisation of traditional economic sectors. Key barriers including the digital divide, inadequate curriculum relevance, funding deficits, and weak industry-education linkages are examined alongside enabling conditions and best practices from comparable economies. A five-pillar strategic framework encompassing curriculum reform, infrastructure development, public-private partnerships, digital entrepreneurship support, and policy alignment is proposed as a roadmap for maximising the employment-generating potential of digital education in Nigeria. The paper contributes to the growing body of scholarship on digital education, economic development, and youth empowerment, offering actionable policy and institutional recommendations for educational administrators, government agencies, and development partners.
