Corporate Culture and Organizational Innovativeness of Manufacturing Companies in Port Harcourt

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between corporate culture and organizational innovativeness of manufacturing companies in Port Harcourt. Specifically, this study aimed at ascertaining the extent to which corporate culture enhances organizational innovativeness. Three objectives and research questions were stated and nine hypotheses were empirically formulated for the study. The study adopted four theories to support the investigation; The Ouchi’s Theory, Social Exchange Theory, Resource-Based View Theory and Organizational Learning Theory. A total of 250 of questionnaire were designed and distributed to respondents, out of which 230 Two Hundred and Thirty copies were duly completed and returned. The data gotten through the use of questionnaire were analyzed with the use of the simple percentage method of analysis, while the hypotheses were tested with the analysis of variance, through the help of the statistical package for social sciences. After the careful analysis of the data and testing of the hypotheses, the researcher finds that there is a positive and significant relationship between corporate culture and organizational innovativeness of manufacturing companies in Port Harcourt. Therefore, the researcher recommends that: Management of manufacturing organizations should always send their employees on regular training and development programmes. This is in order to enhance employees’ job knowledge and competences and/ or performance, which in turn would enhance the on-time realization of their organizations set objectives. In order to remain competitive, management of manufacturing organizations should always device appropriate strategy or strategies to mitigate the activities of rivals. This is in order for them to remain in business. In order to always generate enough innovative ideas, manufacturing organizations should always involve employees in decision making. Participative and interactive leadership style should be employed by management of manufacturing organizations as there are significant evidences that such leadership style promotes innovation. Management of manufacturing organizations should always develop management philosophies that will drive their organizations to prosperity even in the face of intense competition. Management of manufacturing organizations should do well to develop and promote cultures that allow employees to take initiative thereby encouraging innovativeness. A culture that does not encourage employee initiative kills innovation in organizations.
