Behavioural Diversity and Employee Cohesiveness of State- Owned Universities in Bayelsa State, Nigeria

Oyeinkorikiye, Stephan Isaiah, PhD, Allison Isele Kenneth

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between behavioural diversity and employee cohesiveness of state-owned universities in Bayelsa State. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design because data was collected at one point in time from the selected respondents. The population of the study consisted of 3,554 employees of state-owned universities in Bayelsa State, as obtained from the establishment units of the universities. A sample size of 359 was determined using the Taro Yamane formula, while structured questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection. The validity of the instrument was established through face and content validation by experts in management research. The reliability of the instrument was tested using the Cronbach Alpha method, which produced a minimum reliability coefficient of 0.7, showing that the instrument was reliable. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to test the hypotheses with the aid of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26. The findings revealed that behavioural diversity has a positive and significant relationship with teamwork, mutual trust, shared commitment to organisational goals, and collaboration in an organisation. The study concluded that there is a relationship between behavioural diversity and measures of employee cohesiveness such as teamwork, mutual trust, shared commitment and collaboration. The study recommended that university management should promote inclusion, teamwork, trust-building, and interdepartmental collaboration among employees.
