Influence of Penn Resiliency Programme on Emotional Intelligence of SS2 Students in Toro LGA of Bauchi State
Abstract
This study examined the influence of the Penn Resiliency Programme on the emotional intelligence of SS2 students in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The research employed a cross-sectional survey design, with a sample of 250 students selected from a population of 1,245 using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire assessing emotional competence and well-being, validated through expert review and pilot testing (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.82). Descriptive and inferential statistics, including means, standard deviations, and Pearson correlation, were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that participation in PRP significantly enhanced students’ emotional competence, including emotional awareness, regulation, and interpersonal skills, with overall competence rated as high (M = 3.78, SD = 0.64). A strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship was observed between PRP participation and emotional well-being (r = 0.62, p < 0.05). The results suggest that structured resilience-based interventions can effectively improve socio- emotional skills and coping abilities among adolescents. The study recommends the integration of PRP into secondary school curricula, training for teachers and counselors in resilience and emotional intelligence strategies, and further research on the long-term impact of such programs on student outcomes.
