Abstract

This study examines the role of forensic evidence in securing convictions in criminal cases in Taraba State, Nigeria, with particular focus on its challenges and prospects. The aim of the study is to critically analyze the role of forensic evidence in Nigerian courts and identify the key challenges affecting its effective application in criminal adjudication. The study is anchored on Evidential Reliability Theory, which emphasizes the credibility, authenticity, and probative value of evidence in judicial decision-making. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, targeting judges, magistrates, court registrars, clerks, and legal officers in Taraba State. A total of 100 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires measured on a four-point Likert scale, while secondary data were obtained from legal documents, journals, and relevant literature. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were used for analysis. Findings reveal that forensic evidence plays a significant role in establishing criminal liability, improving judicial accuracy, enhancing public confidence in the justice system, and reducing wrongful convictions. However, its effectiveness is hindered by inadequate funding, shortage of forensic experts, poor handling of evidence, corruption, and limited awareness among legal practitioners. The study concludes that although forensic evidence has strong potential to improve criminal justice delivery in Taraba State, its impact is constrained by institutional and operational challenges. The study recommends increased funding for forensic facilities, recruitment and training of experts, proper evidence management, anti-corruption measures, and continuous training for justice sector stakeholders to strengthen the application of forensic science in criminal trials.
