Fatima, Abiola Popoola

Abstract

This study examined the comparative efficacy of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the treatment of drug users in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Rehabilitation Centre, Federal Capital Territory , Abuja, Nigeria. The study was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses. A quasi-experimental research design involving a non-randomized pre-test and post-test control group design was adopted. The population of the study comprised sixty (60) drug users in the NDLEA Rehabilitation Centre, Abuja. The entire population was used as the sample of the study. The instrument for data collection was the Drug Users Behavioural Assessment Questionnaire . Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and paired sample t-test at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of participants exposed to REBT on aggressive behaviour. Similarly, CBT was found to significantly reduce cognitive impairments and social withdrawal among drug users. The study concluded that both REBT and CBT are effective therapeutic interventions for the rehabilitation of drug users. It was recommended that REBT and CBT should be integrated into rehabilitation programmes in NDLEA centres to improve treatment outcomes and reduce relapse rates among drug users.
