Abstract

The study investigated the effects of experiential learning technique on students’ attitudes in social studies in Biu, Borno State, Nigeria. Two specific objectives were raised and converted to two research questions and hypotheses that were answered and tested at 0.5 level of significance. The quasi-experimental design was adopted for the study and a sample of 143 students were selected from a population of 4,438 junior secondary II students in the study area. A 30 item Students Attitude toward Social Studies Scale was used for data collection, the SASSS was subjected to content validity by three experts in Social Studies Education and Research Method and Evaluation from the University of Jos and a reliability index of 0.75. was obtained for the instrument using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected was anlysed with the aid of Mean and standard deviation for answering the research questions and ANCOVA for testing the hypotheses. The findings revealed that a significant improvement in attitude towards Social Studies after the intervention using the experiential learning technique and that male and female students highlighted that the experiential learning approach effectively enhances students’ attitudes regardless of gender. The study recommended that social studies teachers should be made to undergo a compulsory training on the application of experiential learning technique since it has been established that the technique is gender friendly.
