Digital Readiness for Effective Online Learning Among Education Students in Public Universities in Rivers State

Abstract

This study examined digital readiness for effective online learning among education students in public universities in Rivers State. The study specifically investigated the extent to which internet accessibility, technological competence, and attitude toward technology influence effective online learning among education students in Rivers State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of 2,045 final-year education students from Rivers State University, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, and University of Port Harcourt, while a sample of 614 students was drawn using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Digital Readiness for Online Learning Questionnaire ” rated on a 4-point scale. The instrument was validated by experts and tested for reliability using Cronbach Alpha, which yielded a coefficient of 0.70. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that internet accessibility significantly influences effective online learning among education students in public universities in Rivers State. It was also found that technological competence has a significant influence on effective online learning, while attitude toward technology significantly influences students’ engagement and effectiveness in online learning. Based on the findings, it was concluded that digital readiness variables, internet accessibility, technological competence, and attitude toward technology are key determinants of effective online learning among education students. The study recommended that universities should improve internet facilities, enhance students’ digital skills through training, and promote positive attitudes toward the use of technology in learning.
