Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Performance in Rivers State Oil and Gas Sectors

Samuel, Ogonda Victor PhD, Janet Ndukaku Okorji PhD

Abstract

This study examines the link between Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability performance in multinational oil and gas companies operating in Rivers State, Nigeria. Grounded in stakeholder theory and the Triple Bottom Line framework, the research explores three key CSR dimensions—environmental, economic, and ethical responsibilities—and their influence on organizational sustainability outcomes. A correlational research design was adopted, involving 146 management-level HR personnel from five major firms, using structured questionnaires for data collection. With a high response rate of 82.9% and confirmed reliability through pilot testing (Cronbach’s Alpha ranging from 0.842 to 0.972), the data were analyzed using Spearman rank correlation in SPSS version 23. Descriptive findings revealed a strong organizational commitment to environmental management, ethical practices, and economic responsibility. The correlation analysis showed significant positive relationships between all CSR dimensions and sustainability performance, with ethical responsibility exhibiting the strongest relationship (r = .675, p < .01), followed by environmental (r = .637) and economic (r = .516) responsibilities. These results highlight CSR as a strategic imperative rather than a purely philanthropic endeavor, emphasizing its role in enhancing corporate legitimacy, building stakeholder trust, and strengthening operational resilience. The study concludes that embedding CSR into core business strategies significantly improves sustainability performance, particularly in complex socio-political contexts such as the Niger Delta. It recommends integrating CSR into strategic decision-making, enhancing transparency, reinforcing ethical governance, and aligning business practices with global environmental and regulatory standards. The findings provide valuable guidance for policymakers, corporate executives, and development stakeholders aiming to promote sustainable practices in resource-intensive industries.
