Performance and Reward Management: Implications for Organizational Effectiveness and Employee Productivity in Nigeria

Edwin Chiejine Ogwu

Abstract

Performance and reward management remain central to organizational effectiveness, employee motivation, and productivity in contemporary workplaces. Organizations rely on effective performance management systems to align employee activities with strategic goals, while reward systems provide the incentives necessary to sustain employee commitment and enhance productivity. This article examines the concepts of performance management and reward management, their interrelationship, and their implications for employee productivity and organizational performance. The paper further explores performance evaluation systems, reward structures, collective bargaining agreements, and team-based reward systems within the Nigerian public, private, and informal sectors. Drawing from relevant theoretical perspectives and empirical literature, the article argues that transparent performance evaluation and equitable reward systems contribute significantly to employee motivation, talent retention, and organizational success. Conversely, ineffective appraisal systems, poor remuneration, corruption, and inequitable reward practices undermine productivity and employee morale. The study concludes that organizations must adopt fair, transparent, and strategically aligned performance and reward management systems to achieve sustainable organizational growth and employee satisfaction.
