Abstract

This study examined the effect of Information and Communication Technology development on strategic business outcomes in selected banks in Enugu State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to assess the influence of ICT adoption and development on operational efficiency, customer service delivery, profitability, and competitive advantage. The study was motivated by persistent inconsistencies in empirical literature regarding the extent to which ICT investments translate into measurable performance improvements in the Nigerian banking sector, particularly at the branch level where service delivery is executed. A survey research design was adopted, and primary data were collected from management staff, ICT personnel, and operational employees of selected branches of First Bank Plc and United Bank for Africa Plc in Enugu State. The study covered the period 2015–2024, reflecting the phase of intensified digital banking transformation in Nigeria. Data collected through structured questionnaires were analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares regression to test the hypothesized relationships between ICT variables and performance indicators. The empirical results revealed that ICT adoption has no significant effect on operational efficiency in the selected banks. Similarly, ICT development does not significantly impact customer service delivery. Based on these findings, all null hypotheses were accepted. The study concludes that, within the sampled banks and context, ICT development has not yet translated into significant improvements in key strategic business outcomes. This suggests that the effectiveness of ICT may depend more on implementation quality, system integration, and user capability than on mere adoption. The study recommends that banks focus on optimizing existing ICT infrastructure, strengthening staff ICT competencies, and ensuring strategic alignment between digital investments and operational processes. These measures are essential for enhancing the practical impact of ICT on banking performance in Nigeria. Key words: Communication Technology, ICT infrastructure, regression, profitability, ICT adoption.
