Energy Security and Industrial Sector Performance in Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated energy security and industrial sector performance in Nigeria from 1990 to 2023. Specifically, the study analysed the relationship between energy availability and industrial sector performance, energy accessibility and industrial sector performance, energy affordability and industrial sector performance as well as the relationship between energy acceptability and industrial sector performance in Nigeria. The study employed time series data, and the variables are Industry Sector Output , Energy Availability , Energy Accessibility , Energy Affordability , and Energy Acceptability . All data were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and World Development Indicators Statistical Bulletin. The study utilized Auto- Regressive Distributed Lag model to determine the relationship among variables. The study adopted the Energy Poverty Theory. The main findings showed that energy availability, energy accessibility and energy acceptability have significant relationships with industrial sector performance in Nigeria. The study concluded that, energy security exerts a substantial impact on industry sector performance in Nigeria. The study recommended that among other things that government should promote effective investment in reliable energy infrastructure, particularly in urban industrial hubs, to lower operating costs, and improve efficiency across sectors .
