Parental Involvement as a Correlate of Students Academic Achievement in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area

Abstract

Parental involvement is widely recognized as a significant determinant of students' academic success. This study examines the relationship between various forms of parental involvement and the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area , Nigeria. Utilizing Epstein’s Framework and Social Capital Theory, the research explores how the provision of textual materials, parental guidance, and parenting styles correlate with students' academic outcomes. A correlational research design was adopted, the population of this study is 1,120 students selected from seven senior secondary school in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, surveying 295 students across seven senior secondary schools as a sample size using Taro Yamen Formular. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire validated by experts in Measurement and Evaluation department, A test of internal consistency was conducted using Cronbach Alpha method to determine the reliability of the instrument. Reliability coefficients of 0.78, 0.80 and 0.82 were obtained for the various clusters of the instrument and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The findings reveal that the provision of textual materials significantly enhances academic achievement, highlighting the critical role of access to educational resources. Parental guidance, encompassing support with homework and academic discussions, positively correlates with students' performance. Furthermore, authoritative parenting style is identified as particularly effective in fostering academic success. These results underscore the importance of active parental involvement in various forms. The study recommends the promotion of parental workshops, enhanced communication between schools and parents, policy implementation to encourage parental engagement, and community partnerships to support educational initiatives. These strategies aim to leverage parental involvement to improve educational outcomes in Port Harcourt City LGA, addressing the unique local challenges and opportunities.
