Homepreneur Ship Opportunities in Nigeria Arising from Social Networking Activities

Chiamaka L. Anaike, Gilbert Ogechukwu Nworie

Abstract

Households in Nigeria have the potential to improve their financial stability and achieve economic independence through home-based entrepreneurship. However, it appears many Nigerians are not fully engaging in homepreneur ship or social networking activities that could increase their visibility and business opportunities. Limited knowledge about digital platforms, lack of access to technology, and insufficient participation in networks prevent many entrepreneurs from reaching potential customers and resources. The main aim of this study was to examine how homepreneur ship opportunities in Nigeria can be enhanced through social networking activities to improve household financial sustainability. The specific objectives were to identify the different types of homepreneur ship opportunities available to Nigerians and to investigate how social networking supports homepreneurs in leveraging these opportunities for business growth and increased household income. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, focusing on homepreneurs across the thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory, with a sample size of seventy-four respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews, and the responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes. The findings revealed that: the main homepreneur ship opportunities in Nigeria include food production and processing, artisanal and craft-based businesses, and service-oriented or digital-based enterprises; social networking activities support homepreneurs by expanding market reach, facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange, and enhancing business resilience to improve household financial sustainability. Therefore, social media platforms, digital marketing firms, and local business associations should create tailored initiatives to help homepreneurs effectively use social networking tools for market expansion, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. This could include providing easy-to-use guidance, tutorials, and community forums that enhance digital literacy and support consistent engagement, enabling homepreneurs to strengthen business resilience and improve household financial stability.
