Assessment of the Availability and Utilization of Virtual Laboratory on Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Biology Students in Adamawa State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study examined the availability and utilisation of virtual laboratories and their influence on the academic performance of senior secondary school Biology students in Adamawa State, Nigeria. The continuous decline and inconsistency in students’ performance in Biology within the state have become a major concern for educators and stakeholders. As a subject that is largely practical in nature, Biology requires effective laboratory experiences to facilitate the understanding of abstract concepts and the development of scientific skills. The study was guided by a single objective, which focused on determining the availability and utilisation of virtual laboratories in relation to students’ academic performance. To achieve this, one research question and a corresponding hypothesis were formulated. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted, with the population comprising all SS II students offering Biology practical General Murtala Muhammed College Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria. The sample for the study consisted of 167 students who were grouped into three categories. Data were collected using an instrument known as the Biology Practical Performance and Retention Test. The data obtained were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research question, while paired and independent sample t-tests were applied to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that the utilisation of virtual laboratories significantly enhances the academic performance of senior secondary school Biology students in Adamawa State, Nigeria. Based on these findings, the study concluded that the effective use of virtual laboratories plays a crucial role in improving students’ academic achievement in Biology. In view of this conclusion, it was recommended that government and relevant educational stakeholders should prioritise the provision and expansion of virtual laboratory facilities in secondary schools to improve students’ access to interactive and practical learning experiences. Additionally, continuous training programmes should be organised for Biology teachers to strengthen their capacity to integrate and effectively utilise virtual laboratories in classroom instruction.
