Reposition of Arabic Education by Al-Adabby: An Overview of Alabi’s Play ‘Al-Adabiyy Al W?’izul Mujaddid’ (Al-Adabiyy: The Reformist Preacher)
Abstract
This paper examines the contribution of Al-Adabiyy, Shaykh Muhammad Kamalud-Deen Habibullah bn Musa on whose hand the transformation of the traditional Arabic Education to an organized system of education was completed, as demonstrated by the playwright. In so doing, descriptive method was adopted. The data were collected through secondary sources. i.e. Arabic textbooks, seminar papers and journals, however, some interviews were carried out. The scope of the paper revolved around the brief analysis of Alabi's play ‘Al-Adabiyy Al Wā’izul Mujaddid’ (Al- Adabiyy: The Reformist Preacher) and juxtaposition of elements of repositioning Arabic education. Emphasis is laid on the fact that Al-Adabyy had played a great role to achieve the reshape of Arabic - Islamic education, so to compete with other professions at all times. Explanation is given on the need to build on efforts of Al-Adabyy and other great scholars of yesterday about placing Arabic education on its appropriate position that is becoming somehow difficult today, if drastic action is not taken. The paper relates that this work is significant most especially, it refutes some thinking about Arabic as a mere language of Islam which should be upheld only by Muslims. It also emphasizes other roles, Arabic plays towards the development of Nigeria as a member of oil producing countries, and in many other areas. The paper concludes that if Arabic education is promptly repositioned to accommodate recent global digitalization, it would be strengthened to play more of its roles.
