Social Inclusion and Support of Caregivers Through Cohesion and Convergence Policies in Europe

Emma Saraiello, Andrea Capaldo Giliberti

Abstract

Caregivers, both family members and professionals, play an essential role in supporting vulnerable, ill, or elderly individuals, often facing challenges related to psychological stress, physical fatigue, and economic difficulties. Promoting their support requires action on multiple fronts: professional training and qualification, economic assistance, respite services, and social recognition. The European Union’s cohesion and convergence policies, through specific tools and programs, provide concrete opportunities to strengthen caregiver support, reduce regional disparities, and enhance their contribution to society. This work highlights the importance of combining welfare interventions with social inclusion strategies and aims to explore cohesion and convergence policies in the European context in order to identify effective strategies for supporting caregivers.
