The Impact of Globalization on Employment Relations
Abstract
The globalization phenomenon has injected high change in employment relations in the job sectors all over the world, by modifying the relationships existing between employers, employees, trade unions and governments. With an increasingly globalized economy, the labor market is experiencing an increase in competition, changes in regulations and working practices. In this paper, the authors discuss how globalization has influenced the nature of employment relations in terms of labor standards, unionization, employment security, and diversity in the workplace. Although globalization has brought about opportunities to expand and innovate it is also bringing out issues like job insecurity, exploitation of labor as well as deteriorating collective bargaining power. Based on recent findings presented in 2022-24, the paper identifies the necessity to introduce adaptive employment policies that would enhance competitiveness and ensure the safety of employees. Two theories, namely World-Systems Theory and Labour Market Segmentation Theory, form the basis of this study. This study has concluded that Globalization has certainly altered the horizon of the employment relations in the world. The study suggests that; Governments need to empower labor laws and institutions to ensure that the rights of the workers are safeguarded into the forces of globalization. There should be clear regulations on minimum wages, job security, occupational health and safety standards which should be applied particularly in areas where competition is the most evident among nations.
