Abstract

The study examined the influence of Students’ Perception of Social Studies as a Tool for Curbing Social Vices in Plateau State, Nigeria. The study raised three specific objectives and three research questions were answered. The study adopted the descriptive survey design and a sample of 3459 Junior Secondary II students selected from a population of 9193 using Yaro Yamane formula. Students Social Vices Questionnaire with 25-items was used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to content and construct validity by three experts from Nasarawa state university and a reliability coefficient of 0.73 was obtained through test-retest method. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the research questions. The findings indicated that students’ perception toward Social Studies influence and effectiveness in curbing cultism in Plateau State, Nigeria is positive, students’ have positive perception of Social Studies as a tool for curbing examination malpractice in Plateau State, Nigeria and students’ have negative perception of Social Studies in preventing cybercrime among youths. The study recommended that the content of junior secondary school social studies should be reviewed to increase its objectives on addressing causative factors to youth involvement in cultism and the teaching of social studies content aimed at reprimanding students indulging in examination malpractice should be intentional and purposeful
