Strengthening the Integration of Social and Environmental Dimensions into Corporate Reporting: Nigeria’s Adoption of IFRS S1 And S2 and the FRC’s 2026 Sustainability Roadmap Amendments

Sunny B. Beredugo Ph.D

Abstract

Nigeria’s early adoption of IFRS S1 and S2 signifies a crucial advancement in corporate reporting, transforming sustainability from a peripheral aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility into vital, decision-useful insights within general-purpose financial reports. The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria’s Sustainability Roadmap and the amended Sustainability Reporting Guideline 1 (SRG 1) in 2026 aim to overcome implementation challenges faced by companies, providing a clear pathway to compliance. This article illustrates how IFRS S1 and S2 support the integration of social and environmental factors into financial reporting. It also outlines the main challenges encountered during adoption and analyzes how the 2026 amendments improve timelines, governance, and readiness testing. When effectively implemented, this regulatory framework can enhance the relevance of sustainability information, strengthen market discipline, and position Nigeria as a leader in sustainability-focused financial reporting on the continent.
