Small Scale Enterprise Role in Employment Creation in Awka South Local Government Area
Abstract
The study therefore examined the small-scale enterprise role in employment creation in Awka South Local Government Area. The specific objectives include to: assess the extent to which small scale enterprises contribute to job creation in Awka South Local Government Area, and examine the challenges faced by small scale enterprises in creating employment opportunities in Awka South Local Government Area. Survey research design was adopted for the study. According to Ministry of Industry, Trade and Commerce, Anambra State Secretariat in Awka the population of registered SMEs operating in Awka is 4,415. The state secretariat is responsible for the registration of SMEs in Awka. Therefore, the sample size used was 367. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The mean score responses, standard deviation and other relevant statistics were computed using the SPSS to better understand the data. The hypotheses were tested using simple linear regression. The study revealed that the contribution of small- scale enterprises influence employment creation in Awka South Local Government Area to a high extent. Also, that the challenges faced by small scale enterprises in creating employment opportunities in Awka South Local Government Area is at high extent. The study hence recommended among others that government agencies should provide accessible funding schemes to small scale entrepreneurs to enable business expansion and job creation.
